With this blog I want to spark discussion. Discussion about the role of science in general and linguistics in particular. Why? Because I believe that scientists need new skills in order to be successful (see my post on “A new breed of scientists”). Our modern society faces big challenges: a rapidly growing world population, hunger, climate change, the latest financial crisis, limited resources and war, to name a few. The world is in dire need of innovative solutions and creative ideas, of people who rise to the challenge. But what does it take to get there?

In addition, in the modern world technology plays an increasingly important role. Nothing seems to work without it anymore. Technology is everywhere: in the classroom, in our homes, at our offices, at the hospital, the airport, the shopping mall, the supermarket, etc., etc., etc. It is in fact in our pocket, be it in the form of a smart phone or a tablet computer. Technology impacts on us, it impacts on our society, on how we think and do things. In this blog I want to tackle these and related issues. I encourage everyone to share their view of technology and how it impacts on their life.

Please voice your opinion and experiences. It does not matter if you are a scientist or not. What matters is that you share your thoughts with us. I am looking forward to a fruitful discussion that will lead to new insights for all of us. Looking forward to hearing from you!
