"What Is Learning Anyway?"
| 11 June 2014 | Ilker Yengin

I call the term learning as the process of structuring and creating who we are. For this process, I especially avoid to use the word “education”, because education is a set of formal activities that are programmed to structure our process of learning externally. Education contains learning activities but it is not the direct phenomena, but the learning is.

Learning is an activity that spontaneously happens everywhere all the time. Learning is there, as long as we breathe and will continue until we give out our last one. Learning is about us, more than anything, although we assume that we learn due to the effects and requirements of our school, work and social life. In fact, we are not totally mistaken to assume it in that way because we normally do the learning activities in terms of our adaptation to the external environment. The adaptation mechanisms take over the most of our life time so we may think that’s why we have to learn. However, learning itself is the essence and it is not all about a particular environment, it is about who are we in this particular environment. Learning is who we are, because we think and feel according to the things we learn. We (our mind sets) come to existence due to our thoughts and feelings. In other words, our existence is directly related to our learning processes.

Understanding the learning processes helps us in knowing who we are. In order to understand ourselves, we need to observe the circumstances that we are in and making some analyses about these circumstances. This will also help us to be aware about our skills, traits, thoughts, believes, desires and feelings etc. It will be easier to realize what we need for our existence after we understand ourselves. Understanding who we are is critical to see in which direction we need to go to and make plans accordingly. In short, we need to know how learning happens for us so we can control it.

To start discovering learning processes for us, I will write a lot about the process of learning and technology, how and why our brain direct us to learn (or how and why we direct our brain: this is an egg-chicken problem), how technology effect our brain in learning processes, the practices about learning in our today’s education world and what would be the learning with technology in near future such as in 21 century.

Hope these posts will be helpful in your process of learning and crafting your entities.
