ISOLA
FILLM Welcomes ISOLA as a New Member

A Word of Welcome from Roger D. Sell, the President of the FILLM

"To welcome the International Society for the Oral Literatures of Africa (ISOLA) into FILLM is a very great pleasure indeed! ISOLA is a large and lively organization, supporting vital work in a research area which is becoming ever more central to our understanding of the human race -- its history, its present, its possible futures. For more information about ISOLA, see below or visit their website: www.africaisola.org.

"With ISOLA as a Member Association, FILLM becomes even more truly international, and ISOLA's contribution to the entire range of FILLM activities will be an enormous enrichment. Most immediately, there is much that ISOLA members can offer to our understanding of the topics down for discussion at the FILLM Congress in Ningbo next year, and plans are already in the making for a strong ISOLA input to *FILLM Studies in Languages and Literatures*. So to all ISOLA members: You are most heartily welcome to FILLM! Please do collaborate wherever possible with our other Member Associations, and please do take maximum advantage of everything our organization can offer. Your ideas for new FILLM initiatives of any and every kind are keenly awaited!

"ISOLA's entry into FILLM is a very fitting first result of our current recruitment
campaign. (See more here.) I should like to thank those Members of the FILLM Committee who have been instrumental in bringing it about, and to express my hope that this will spur us all on to continuing efforts. A number of other associations are at present considering the possibility of applying for FILLM Membership, some of them representing the new types of association which we can welcome under the terms of our revised Constitution -- for instance, associations concentrating on just a single literary writer or group of writers, and associations exploring a topic or an approach that is relevant to the understanding of many different languages or literatures. One association of this second type has already applied for FILLM
membership, which is likely to be granted before the end of the year. But additional
candidates for membership are more than welcome. So to anyone who belongs to, or knows
of, a likely association: Please just drop an e-mail to our Secretary General and myself!"

Roger D. Sell
President of the FILLM, 2011 – 2014

The International Society for the Oral Literatures of Africa (ISOLA)

ISOLA is an international, multicultural, multilingual scholarly organization, dedicated to the study, promotion, conservation and diffusion of the rich oral traditions of Global Africa, comprising the continent and its Diasporas all over the world. The Society began in 1991 during a conference held at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London focusing on African oral arts. It was later formally established during its Cape Town conference in 1998. Since its inception, ISOLA has grown tremendously, providing an institutional home for the scores of scholars who meet at its biennial conferences in venues in Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean.

The Society draws its international membership from experts and students involved in the exploration of the rich and vibrant oral traditions of Africa and of the African Diaspora. Its members engage in a wide spectrum of research with respect to African oral traditions, past and contemporary, in areas such as performance, the literary arts, linguistics, history and social dynamics, as well as comparative theoretical or meta-theoretical studies. Members are encouraged to report on their restorative, archival, and field research while establishing multi-disciplinary networks. To this end, the Society’s primary activity is its biennial scholarly conference, culminating in published proceedings.

The international character of ISOLA is demonstrated by the diversity of its membership and the distribution of the sites of our conferences. The Society actively pursues the participation of scholars and graduate students from the African continent, the African Diaspora and from African Studies specialists across the world. At present, our main languages of discussion and communication are English and French. However, in the short term, our aim is to actively solicit and encourage the membership of scholars from the Portuguese-speaking and Spanish-speaking world and from the African Diaspora of the Americas.
