Update (26.5.2014): It seems as if the IES might have a future yet: http://www.london.ac.uk/5642.html

Following recent funding cuts, the executive management of the School of Advanced Studies at the University of London (headed by Dean and Chief Executive, Professor Roger Kain and Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Adrian Smith) have recommended the closure of The Institute of English Studies (IES).

In response, the 'Save the IES Steering Group' has been created and it is co-chaired by Professor Anne Varty (Head of the Department of English, Royal Holloway University of London) and Professor Gordon Campbell DLitt, FBA (Professor of Renaissance Studies, University of Leicester). The group is now asking people to support them by signing their petition.

It is FILLM's official view that the IES is one of the most important centres for the study of English language and literature, and that its closure would be extraordinarily damaging to the academic community both nationally and internationally.
