IADA
FILLM Welcomes IADA as a New Member

A Word of Welcome from Roger D. Sell, the President of the FILLM

"IADA is the second association to join FILLM as a result of our current recruitment drive, and it is a very great pleasure to wish all IADA members welcome to our world-wide community of language and literature experts in countless different subject-areas.

"Our revised Constitution makes it possible for us to welcome associations which are devoted to one particular approach to, or branch of, linguistic or literary studies. IADA is just such an association, and my hope is that several other associations of the same type will soon be applying for membership.

"In the case of IADA, I know quite a bit about their work at first hand. I have had the honour of hosting one of their international conferences in my own department, and I have had the enormous pleasure of working together with IADA members in some very exciting interdisciplinary projects. IADA interprets "dialogue" in a fruitfully broad sense, and they have been very hospitable to my own work as mainly a literary scholar on the topic of "literature as dialogue" -- in fact several of my own books have been published in their excellent *Dialogue Studies Series* (John Benjamins: Amsterdam and Philadelphia).

"I mention this because I think it suggests some of the exciting scholarly synergies we
can now look forward to within the FILLM framework. May I strongly encourage IADA colleagues to get in touch with linguists and literary scholars in our other associations, and vice versa! One forum for such discussions would of course be our upcoming Congress in Ningbo, China. Please note that there are still some places left!"

The International Association for Dialogue Analysis (ISOLA)

IADA was established in 1990 in Bologna on the occasion of the 3rd International Conference on Dialogue Analysis when it accepted a proposal made by the founding members Sorin Stati, Franz Hundsnurscher and Edda Weigand.

The notion of dialogue is central for its scientific profile. It is however not restricted to a specific view of dialogue nor to a particular model but covers the whole range of language use including approaches based on other concepts such as conversation, discourse or social interaction. The following premises are considered to be common ground:
  • Language is primarily used for communication.
  • Communication is always dialogic.
In this sense IADA focuses on a notion of ‘Language as Dialogue’.

IADA crosses orthodox disciplinary boundaries and considers a genuinely interdisciplinary approach necessary for addressing the complex phenomenon of dialogue. Linguists, literary scholars, philosophers, sociologists, psychologists and scholars from other disciplines interested in dialogic issues are called upon to join the dialogic circle. By covering the whole range of language use, dialogue analysis comes close to pragmatics. Indeed every pragmatic issue is included. Dialogue Analysis however provides the analytic key to Pragmatics and thus allows us to structure the uncircumscribed field of a ‘pragmatic perspective’.
