FILLM News

End-of-the-Year Greetings!

It's time for the last volume of the FILLM Newsletter of 2015. The end of a year is usually a time for reflection, so we begin this volume by taking the opportunity to say a few words about the year that has passed and what the future holds for FILLM and its member associations.

This last volume of 2015 is dense, containing loads of news from us and our member associations. From FILLM's perspective, the year ends on a high. We are very pleased to announce that the European Society for the Study of English (ESSE) has become a member of FILLM. With the addition of ESSE and, earlier this year, also the Global Rhetoric Society (GRS), FILLM now gathers 13 academic associations which, in turn, represents more than 14,000 individual scholars and over 60 other academic organizations.

FILLM's continued growth is very positive and next year we'll be working hard to get more associations to join. That said, a growing member-base isn't an aim in itself. We will work equally hard on making sure that FILLM pursues its aim of increasing international scholarly cooperation which bring together
detailed research on particular topics with themes and approaches of global relevance and general application. Such cooperation is essential if we are to strengthen the position of the Humanities in the world at large.

2015 was an eventful year in many ways. For FILLM, the most noteworthy things has been the introduction of a new fee structure at the beginning of the year which has been crucial for the
growth of our membership base. The year also saw the publication of the first volume in the FILLM Book Series, Major Versus Minor? Languages and Literatures in a Globalized World and the introduction of the John Benjamins Prize for Linguistic and Literary ScholarshipBeyond that the federation also got a great new logo and the website was given a much-needed overhaul.

Looking ahead, 2016 promises to be an equally exciting year.
Australia, China, Ireland, South Africa and the United States are just some of the countries where our member associations are organizing conferences in the coming year. As you can see below, these conferences are not only held in fascinating places, they also focus on interesting themes. For some, the deadline for submitting proposals have already passed, but there are still several for which the Call for Papers are still open.

From FILLM's point of view, we are proud to say that the second volume of the FILLM Books Series is due to appear in March and there should be a couple more volumes coming out later in the year. The whisper along the grapewine is that there will also very soon be more information about the 27th FILLM Congress in Delhi, India in March 2017. Beyond that, a number of other initiatives are likely to set sail during 2016. Keep an eye on the FILLM website for more information.

Finally, we would like to say that we hope you've enjoyed receiving the FILLM Newsletter and found it to be a useful source of information. If it has drawn your attention to a fascinating conference or helped gather more abstracts for an event you're organizing, it has served its main purpose.

Please remember that you are free to circulate the FILLM Newsletter on your website, on email lists, social media, etc. And if you have any comments and suggestions on how the Newsletter can be improved or if you'd like to contribute, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

On behalf of everyone involved with FILLM, I'd like to thank you for the past year and wish you the best of luck for 2016!

Adam Borch
FILLM Communications Officer, 2014-2017

FILLM Blogs
FILLM Blogs

FILLM is happy to introduce a new blogger to the fold: former FILLM President and current editor of the FILLM Book Series, Professor Emeritus Roger D. Sell.  Roger has published widely on several different periods of English and American literature, and has developed an account of literature as one among other forms of communication.

You can read Roger's first two posts now. One reflects on the republication of one of his early books, Literary Pragmatics. The other is inspired by an article he has recently published in the Ben Jonson Journal.

Don't forget to also check out our other bloggersSebastian Feller has recently dicussed the linguistic limitations of current developments in artifical intelligence, particularly in relation to the chatterbot Eugene Goostman.

You're more than welcome to drop Sebastian and Roger a line via email if you wish to discuss the topics of their blogs in more detail.
